iSWA: integrated Space Weather Analysis System

About iSWA

The integrated Space Weather Analysis System (iSWA) was developed to resolve a critical agency challenge: to accurately specify and forecast both the large‐scale and local space environments and their probable impacts for NASA missions. The iSWA system also addressees the technical challenge of presenting actionable space weather information in a form that is both easily accessible and useful to the NASA customer.

Development of the iSWA system has been a joint activity between NASA HQ Office of the Chief Engineer and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center ( The Applied Engineering and Technology Directorate, and the Science and Exploration Directorate ). ISWA is situated within and based on the Space Weather Laboratory's Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC), which provides real‐time forecasts using the most advanced space weather models currently available. CCMC is supported by the Heliophysics Division at NASA/HQ and by the National Science Foundation.

The resulting iSWA system is a flexible, web‐based dissemination system for NASA‐relevant space weather information that combines forecasts from state‐of‐the‐art space weather models with concurrent space environment information from observations. iSWA is customer configurable and adaptable for use as a powerful decision‐making tool, providing mission managers and decision‐makers with personalized "quick look" space weather information, detailed insight into space weather forecasts, and tools for historical impact analysis.

FAQ

Why is iSWA not working properly after a version change?
  • Sometimes the web browser caches old resources that are no longer valid after a new version has been deployed. Usually if you clear your browser cache and reload the page, all of the correct resources will be downloaded and the system should begin to function properly.
What is port 8080 and can I get rid of it?
  • Port 8080 is an alternative http port. Web servers usually use port 80, which is the official/default port for http. Whenever a web page like http://iswa.ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov is visited, the default port 80 is used as in http://iswa.ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov:80 . The iSWA system utilizes both 80 as well as 8080 to separate the normal web pages and services like the front splash page and this wiki, from the actual iSWA System Web Application.
If your firewall blocks access to port 8080, you can use the alternative access point at:
http://iswa.ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov/IswaSystemWebApp
NOTE: iSWA generates URLs whenever the "Save Layout" or "Clear" buttons are selected. If the resulting URL contains the "8080" port specifier, simply remove that portion of the URL and reload the page.
Please be aware that iSWA is developed and performance tuned to operate on port 8080 and using the http://iswa.ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov/IswaSystemWebApp URL may result in slightly slower load times.
Are there any backup or alternative iSWA access points?
NOTE: The two main access points provide load-balancing and automated failover capabilities for iswa services. You may notice in the title bar of your iswa system web app page a specific "iswa node name" is listed. In some instances, a specific node can be accessed directly, but this behavior is discouraged.

Change Log

March 05, 2012 - iSWA Version 1.10.0 [DonkeyCone]
  • There are 15 new WSA-ENLIL-CONE model Cygnets now available in iSWA. These are in addition to the original/existing nine (9) WSA-ENLIL-CONE model Cygnets that are "looping" animated gifs. The new Cygnets now allow users to control both the animation sequence and frame rate. Click Here To View New CME Movie Cygnets
Another feature of interface is the download/export button that links to a pre-encoded mpeg4 movie file of the current cme event for users to download.
  • Ovation Prime Model data products - The Ovation Prime model is a statistical model that specifies auroral precipitation levels based on diffuse, wave-driven and mono-energetic particle precipitation. Energy fluxes are plotted on the northern hemisphere. In this real-time implementation, we are plotting the sum of the energy flux (ergs/cm^/s or mW/m^2/s) of all the precipitation types for three 'species': electrons ('e"), ions ('i) and electrons+ions ("e+i")

Ovation Prime: is a new-generation precipitation model (Newell et al., 2010) that is driven by an optimized solar wind coupling function (Newell et al., 2007). This model includes seasonal variation and separates different types of auroras: monoenergetic, wave, diffuse, and ion auroras. Here we sum all the types together.

  • Solar Dynamic Observatory ( SDO ) - There were several SDO data products that were NOT properly time-tagged and archived in iSWA. All of the improperly time-tagged products have been removed from the system and replaced with the correct/appropriate data and metadata. Click Here To View 15 SDO data products in iSWA
NOTE: The 171,193,and 304 wavelengths are space weather products with higher update intervals.
  • SuperTimeline Layout - the SuperTimeline data selection control was becoming less usable as we added more products to the timeline. There were several complaints about this, especially from our PC users. The entire control module was changed to a more usable, maintainable, and expandable control.
